AOA Statement

We have recently been made aware that one of our AOA doctors, Dr. Laura Mercer, was filmed without her consent during her residency training during an abortion counseling session. Dr. Mercer was not with AOA at the time this film was made in 2012 and was not performing abortions. This abortion counseling video was made while she was in residency. She was inexperienced in this area, and was learning about this process.

We want our patients to know that abortion counseling is a required part of OB/GYN training. According to standards set forth by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), it is required that "experience with induced abortion must be part of residency training. Although residency programs may opt out of providing in-house training, they must provide their residents the opportunity for abortion training at an outside facility. Similarly, residents with religiousor moral objections may opt out of receiving abortion training. However, residents must receive training in management of abortion complications.”

ACOG supports the availability of comprehensive reproductive health services for all women and specifically supports:

  1. Strategies that may reduce unintended pregnancy, such as comprehensive sexuality education and improved access to effective contraceptive methods and emergency for all women wishing to avoid pregnancy.
  2. Availability of safe, legal, and accessible abortion services.
  3. Education about family planning and abortion for all medical students as an integral part of reproductive health education.
  4. Education about family planning and abortion as an integrated component of the obstetrics and gynecology residency training.

Once Dr. Mercer completed her training and residency as an OB/GYN specialist, she joined AOA in July 2013. Since then, she has delivered over 80 babies, and her commitment to families is evident in the number of patients who specifically request that she be their OB/GYN. Dr. Mercer is an integral part of the AOA Family, partly because of her extensive training in all areas related to women’s health.

AOA doctors do not provide abortion services. And while Dr. Mercer, nor any other AOA physician, performs abortions, they understand that family planning and abortion education is required by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for allOB/GYN residents, as it is an integral part of reproductive health education. We believe in the power of family, the strength of unity, the importance of listening and the respect that comes from understanding. At AOA we’re committed to earning your trust by providing the safest and most reliable care and procedures available anywhere. We hold your respect in the highest regard and will take every opportunity to be courteous and helpful before, during and after your visit to our offices. We’ll actively listen and strive to understand your feelings, thoughts, hopes and concerns. It is out of a sincere sense of appreciation for who you are and everything you do that we strive to provide a thoroughly comfortable – and rewarding experience for you and all the members of your family.
