The AOA Family Gains a New Practice - Arizona Gynecology Associates

Dr. Crawford and family

Dr. Crawford was a founding partner in the Maricopa OBGYN practice in 1980. He has recently left the practice to for Arizona Gynecology Associates. We spoke with Dr. Crawford to learn a little more about him as a person and to get some insight about this new practice.

What was your inspiration for going out on your own with this new practice?

“I was a founding partner of Maricopa OBGYN, but in the year 2000 I decided to transition to just gynecology. Going out on my own is part of my “sunset plan.” I am 62 and I still want to practice, but I am interested in downsizing, reducing overhead and working only part-time, so I opened Arizona Gynecology Associates.”

Dr. Crawford sees the move as part of a natural progression in obgyn: to focus on obgyn during the first half of your career and to focus on gynecology in the second half.

“When you’re young, often your patients are also young and starting their families. As you age, so do your patients. Once they stop having children, it can be preferable for older patients to see a doctor who is focused on gynecology. They don’t have to worry about the doctor being pulled away from an appointment to deliver a baby.”

What is unique about your new practice?

“Hardly anyone has a solo practice anymore, so this will be a new model. It gives me flexibility in my practice and opens up space for younger partners in the group practice.”

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Where did you attend medical school?

“I went to medical school in Texas and moved to Phoenix in 1976 to begin my residency at Good Samaritan Hospital.”

Please tell us a little about your family.

“I am currently single. I have three children and one grandchild. One of my kids is a fighter pilot stationed in Korea, another is a doctor of counseling in Portland, and the third teaches English in Barcelona.”

What are your hobbies or interests?

“When I turned 50 I decided to branch out and try something different. My wife and I bought property on the beach in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. We built and ran a very successful bed and breakfast. I began dividing my time between Phoenix and Mexico. The property is called Las Palmas and we are currently transitioning from a bed & breakfast to owner condos.”
