Affordable Care Act Update - Birth Control Covered under Preventative Benefits

Healthcare reform under the Affordable Care Act is good news for women. Temporary birth control, like the pill and IUDs, as well as permanent birth control, such as Essure, a permanent birth control procedure that is non-surgical and hormone-free, are now included in women’s preventive benefit coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Major national and local insurers have confirmed that they will cover both temporary and permanent birth control under the new law. Some individual plans may have exemptions and the availability of the benefits depends on the policy renewal date. And since 2013 is a transition year, the benefit might not be available until the plan renews over the course of the year. So please check with your insurance company to be sure.
