Endometrial Ablation Can Safely Stop Your Heavy Periods

Endometrial Ablation Can Safely Stop Your Heavy Periods

Endometrial ablation is a procedure for premenopausal women with heavy periods due to benign causes who are finished with childbearing. The procedure is safer than a hysterectomy and can be done in your AOA doctor’s office in under an hour. AOA physicians use NovaSure, a specific endometrial ablation procedure that uses the quick delivery of radiofrequency energy to gently remove the uterine lining.

With endometrial ablation there are no pills involved, and no hormonal side effects. 90% of women experience a dramatic reduction or complete cessation of menstrual bleeding. Temporary side effects can include cramping, nausea, vomiting, discharge and spotting. Most women can resume normal activities within just a few days, but plan to give your body as long as three months to fully heal on the inside and resume its normal cycle.

Not every woman is a candidate for endometrial ablation. It is not for a woman who has uterine cancer, a urinary or pelvic infection, or an IUD. NovaSure is not a sterilization procedure; pregnancy after this procedure would be very dangerous, as the uterine wall would not be able to support fetal development. It is important to discuss with your AOA healthcare provider what birth control to use after a NovaSure procedure.
