What is Round Ligament Pain?

While you may not hear much about it, pregnancy can bring on a fairly common abdominal pain caused by the stretching of the round ligament. This is the ligament that holds your uterus in suspension within your abdomen. As your pregnancy advances and your uterus grows in size and weight, this ligament becomes long and thin, stretching and tensing like a rubber band.

What is Round Ligament Pain?

When the ligaments become stretched they can pull on nerve fibers and cause a great deal of pain. The pain can be brought on by something as simple as rolling over in your sleep, exercise, or simply walking. A ligament spasm can trigger a sharp pain, usually on the right side of the body. These spasms, while painful, are very normal.

Because pain from stretching round ligaments can be severe, it can be confused with other, more serious problems, like appendicitis, ruptured ovarian cysts, or abnormal growths in the abdomen. The best course of action if you are unsure is to contact your AOA healthcare provider and describe your symptoms. He or she will be able to help determine whether your pain is anything serious.

If you have any of the following symptoms, do not hesitate to seek emergency care:

  • Fever or chills
  • Pain on urination
  • Difficulty walking
